Antibiotic use in poultry production; a cross-sectional study in a selected district in Sri Lanka

Introduction: Rampant use of antibiotics in animal husbandry contributes significantly to the development and spread antibiotic resistance. This study determines activity poultry feed assesses knowledge on feeding practices their potential effects antimicrobial resistance among farm owners. Methods: Poultry available for sale shops ready serve water samples from selected farms Kegalle District, Sri Lanka were tested using agar well diffusion method against three control organisms; Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Escherichia coli ATCC25922 Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853 zone inhibition around each was measured. All owners interviewed basic details regarding such as area, number animals, source awareness feeds obtained. Results: No detected commercially (5/5) (18/18). An antibacterial effect collected 33.33% (6/18) farms. Seventy-eight percent (14/18) declared that they administer different types additives containing along with drinking served animals. Forty-four believe usage is not a good practice harmful human health while similar percentage claim it favorable benefits them economically. None aware can contribute increasing community.
